What is Epigenetics? According to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Every individual has the right to develop themselves through their genes, and the power of their genes should be used for the benefit of humans…” Why do we need to embrace this concept of building flourishing communities for all? The reason why we need to embrace this concept of building flourishing communities for all is because there is a growing body of research that strongly suggests that genetically influenced behavior can be inherited. We are all affected by our genes, some of us more than others.

In fact, there is now a wealth of research that indicates very strongly that environment plays a very significant role in shaping who we are as individuals. One of the key ways that environments shapes children’s outcomes is through the processes of socialization and developmentalism. In this day and age, it’s important to pay attention to the process of socialization and developmentalism, which have both been found to be important factors in determining the course of early childhood development. This is why Dr. Tom Loosemore and I began working together more than 15 years ago to develop a series of methods for parenting school children and getting them to become successful, healthy citizens in the future.

One of the ways that environmental variables can shape children’s outcomes is through the science of epigenetics. Epigenetics is the science of gene expression. It is the process by which an organism’s genetic code is written in its entirety. Children who suffer from the consequences of adverse childhood experiences are more likely to exhibit environmentally related traits. For example, they may be less sensitive to the presence of toxins in the environment, or they may have a lower tolerance for pain or may be more resilient to stress. These are just a few examples of how environments shape our behavior.

Through the process of environmental developmentalism, we also learn about the nature of relationships. This is critical because it allows us to better understand and anticipate the ways that children will behave when they are in various social settings. In fact, many of the behaviors that are revealed by environmental developmentalism are the same behaviors that are observed in humans in their relations with others. One study for instance showed that although young children showed a significant preference for familiar faces over strangers, they were equally responsive to non-familiar faces. This finding has implications for understanding how important information and the modeling of appropriate relationships is during early childhood development.

The most important information to consider in the development of a healthy and prosperous society is the general condition of the population. A healthy population has access to the processes and organizations that create and support the processes of opportunity and better outcomes. These should include discussion and action to address the factors that lead to poor health outcomes and much of the difficulty so many have in succeeding at work and in family life.
